Track Biography:

The Tynan and Armagh hunt can be traced back as far as 1840, when Sir James Stronge of Tynan Abbey estate started the pack at his own expense calling it the Tynan Harriers. The Tynan Harriers sometimes hunted with Lord Waterford’s Armagh Harriers and from these two the Tynan and Armagh hunt was born in 1895.

The first point-to-point was organised in 1895 and has remained at Farmclaffey since then making it one of the oldest point-to-points on the fixture list.

Over the years, Farmacaffley point-to-point has produced many top national hunt stars such as 2002 Grand National winning Bindaree and Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Truckers Tavern.

A first four-year-old maiden at the venue and Rob James is responsible for the only horse with a previous completed effort to its name as his One More Stroke finished second at Tallow earlier in the month. His stable were among the winners in the age division last weekend which is a boost for his claims, with the market giving the best guide as to what is expected from the many newcomers.

HUGH DE LACY took a step forward from his Portrush debut in October when returning recently at Kirkistown to finish a promising third. He had the potentially re-opposing Ballyfort behind him on that occasion and will bid to confirm that form once again. Of the others, Intrepide Sivola is a close relation to One For Harry, was sent off as the favourite for his debut at Knockanard recently before falling at the midway point.

HENRY AFRICA justified favouritism to beat two rivals and win this race 12 months ago. He has not been seen since but would have to hold strong claims of becoming the first back-to-back winner of this since 2017. Anseanachai Cliste was the last horse to do that and his connections could have the big danger in Perfect Pupil. He was placed in a four-year-old maiden in the spring when with Johnny Berry and has changed stables since.

FRIARS ISLAND LADY has been given a break since disappointing somewhat at Lingstown in November because she had only been denied by a neck at Umma House beforehand in what is a race that is working out well. She can become the fourth subsequent maiden winner to emerge from it in this. Stablemate Emilys Choice offered promise on her debut in Punchestown behind two nice types, whilst Fortune Dancer is progressive and can step forward once again.

David Christie could have a strong hand in this, with his On The Sod having won on his two previous visits here including in this race last year, but has not been seen since the latest of those successes and it could be that the top hunter chaser WINGED LEADER has more to offer. Recent Naas runner-up Le Malin got within a length and a half of him at Cragmore but has an easier alternative elsewhere this weekend, whilst this could be a different test for Brain Power who has won three of his last four starts.

THE FLIER BEGLEY has not been seen in the pointing fields since finishing second at Lisronagh back in 2020, but since then he has finished placed on no fewer than six occasions on the racecourse including in three consecutive maiden hurdles last year. That experience could be rewarded here. Dunboy Lad, Clarabello and Ballylinch have all made the frame in the past and have place claims once again.
